Paralytic polio:
This is the most severe form of polio. It starts off with the same symptoms as abortive and non-paralytic then progresses into more severe symptoms. These can include loss of superficial reflexes as well as muscle spasms and pain. Asymmetric paralysis usually follows. While this is the most severe form only 1-2% of people who contract the disease become paralyzed and they can recover. Unfortunately, for some the weakness in muscles and/or paralysis can last the rest of their life. |
